CNN —Democrats are increasingly anxious about their party’s internal divisions over the Israel-Hamas war, which are threatening to hurt their chances in November. The eruption of pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses and the ensuing clashes with police portend bad times ahead. After President Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not run for reelection, the party nominated his vice president, Hubert Humphrey. However, there are many important differences between 2024 and 1968 that could make this current situation significantly less damaging for Biden than some Democrats fear.

Two White House officials noted that the number of speeches for Biden and Harris is similar to the two previous years. Another White House official declined to preview how Biden might address the campus unrest. Biden campaign officials say that despite the media focus on campus protests, public polling and their own research show that young voters are more concerned with other issues. "We know from the conversations we have that young voters are planning to vote, and voters are planning to vote for us," she said. Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., visited multiple Wisconsin college campuses this week as a member of the Biden campaign's national advisory board.

This week’s rapid spread of college campus encampments meant to protest the war has ratcheted up the pressure on the US over its support for Israel. Second gentleman Doug Emhoff spoke by phone with two Jewish leaders on campus, a White House official said, to discuss the immediate need to address antisemitism on college campuses. Despite being just miles from Columbia and the most tense scenes of the protests, Biden will not be making a visit to campus as he holds events in the New York area Friday. The White House must by May 8 certify whether Israel is complying. And while Sanders sought assurances from Biden on how he was approaching the situation, the president remained characteristically diplomatic, Shakir, the Sanders adviser said.

Debt forgiveness has historically been a highly partisan issue, with supporters and detractors split down party lines. Almost a quarter, 23%, of Gen X voters surveyed said they or someone in their household had student loan debt. The Supreme Court last June struck down the president's $400 billion plan to deliver student loan forgiveness to as many as 40 million Americans. Meanwhile, the popularity of loan forgiveness among voters may prove a challenge for Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee for president.

CNN —Black History Month, which gets underway this week, is a chance to give Americans the timely reminder that you can’t teach our history honestly without understanding Black struggle and triumph. There are few aspects of America’s past that haven’t been impacted by conscientious Black people and their resistance to systemic racism and illiberal democracy. The situation at Harvard has been made more dire by the university’s failure to push back sufficiently against broader political attacks. Another vocal critic of Penslar is the former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who was also an outspoken opponent of Gay’s. As an academic institution, we should be leading the resistance to these assaults on higher education, not bowing to them.

So-called "earned wage access" programs, which operate either directly to the consumer or through employers, let workers tap a portion of their wages before payday, often for a fee. Earned wage access has gotten more popularEarned wage access goes by various names: daily pay, instant pay, accrued wage access, same-day pay and on-demand pay, for example. "It's another version of payday loans," Monica Burks, policy counsel at the Center for Responsible Lending, a consumer advocacy group, said of earned wage access. However, a recent study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that earned wage access products "generally cost less than typical costs associated with payday loans."

In the days before the Israel-Hamas war, the battle in Ukraine amounted to about eight percent of CNN’s television coverage. After the attacks, CNN —the cable news network that provided the most Ukraine coverage — fell to under one percent. The noted drop in Ukraine war coverage from the press, given the fresh violence in the Middle East, is not completely surprising. As Kolbe told me, “Putin’s media campaign to paint Ukraine as divided, corrupt, and a puppet of the U.S. and NATO, is a central part” of his strategy. The lack of press attention makes that all the more easier.

You may have heard recently about The New York Times, Siena poll that has worried Democrats, the one about the battleground states. I’m a pollster focused on understanding young Americans, and there’s a critical part of the electorate that we need to be paying attention to, and that’s Gen Z. But I mean, honestly, to this point, I mean, they haven’t done anything for our parents, our parents’ parents. Young people need to be reminded of those issues. They need to be reminded that because of them, America is a different and, I would argue, a better place.

Yemen’s Houthi militia claimed an attempted attack on southern Israel on Tuesday, saying it had launched a “large batch” of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones toward Israeli targets.
